Mini Tennis Red Festival

Wells Cathedral School, in partnership with Jason Hedaux from SASP and Kevin Durney from Wells Tennis Club hosted the Mendip Area Primary School Mini Tennis Red competition for school children in years 3 and 4.

Six teams from four schools turned up to play this version of the game which uses smaller space and adapted equipment, all of which is designed to encourage young players to get involved in tennis.

Under the expertise of our Head Coach Kevin Durney and Cathedral coach Tomas Simko the event started with the young players warming up with fun games and activities followed up by some introductory tips on basic tennis skills.  The round robin event allowed every child plenty of time on court both in singles and doubles and it quickly became obvious that the level of the skills developed as the event went on.

At the end of the event William Mobbs and Orla Ensor, both from Elmhurst school in street were awarded with trophies for the best developing player and Joshua Matthews, Elodie Matthews, Edwin Brewster and Eleanor Thornborogh Stoberry Park school were eventual winners on 116pts.

Kevin Durney, who was recently appointed the county coach for the red age group, said that “the event successfully focused on the need to ensure children had fun and enjoyed the experience, while at the same time learning about the game and how to play it well”.
