Wells Ladies A-team played at home against Woodland A
Both Wells pairs won their opening matches, Wendy Edwards and Caroline Moule 6-2 6-4 and Erika Cotton and Lorna Jenkins 7-5 6-1. Erika and Lorna (who stepped in with short notice) also won their second rubber 6-3 6-1. Wendy and Caroline couldn’t match that result and lost 3-6 6-7. Thanks to the extra rubber won by Erika and Lorna Wells A won overall with 8-2 points.
Ladies D vs Victoria B
Thanks to Deborah for being a magnificently hospitable and organised stand in captain for the night. They may have lost 10-0 but I saw some impressive volleying from all the team and the opposition were very experienced and crafty!
Another club’s captain told me this week that she thought ‘all Wells ladies are lovely ‘ and that they provided great teas. So we have something to be proud of even if we don’t win all our matches!
Ladies D vs Woodland C
A more challenging match due to the multi-use courts with various markings but still an enjoyable one with friendly hosts. Ruth and Arabella managed to finish both their matches in straight sets before lights out. Jeannie and Sarah M won their first rubber in straight sets, but let a 5-2 lead in the first of the second rubber slip to a tie-break, which they won! However the struggle to finish the first set meant there was no time to finish the rubber so the second set was abandoned at 1-1. Good news is that the score so far is 9-0 Wells D.
Wells Ladies A welcomed Taunton A
The pairing Wendy Edwards and Caroline Moule lost their first rubber 2-6 2-6, many deuces were played without securing the winning point. The second rubber was won 6-4 6-4 and the pair had to withhold against a Taunton pair, which looked easy to play, but had many tricky shots and were getting stronger during the rubber.
The pairing Erika Cotton and Julia Nest started with a convincing win 6-3 6-1 . They also managed to take a set in their second rubber, losing 3-6 7-5 4-6. Erika’s and Julia’s determination deserved that extra set, which gave Wells the overall win and extra points for the 7-4 win.
