A great start for Wells in the NSTL winter league

After the opening month of the season, each of our winter league teams have played two matches and all got off to a fantastic start.

The A team opened their campaign at home with a 10-1 victory over Wedmore B.  Mark Preston and Jack Williams fought from a set down to come back and clinch victory in a championship tie break.  Captain Marie Bruckshaw alongside Wendy Edwards battled to win the first set in the tie break before taking the second set 6-3. The mixed doubles were more straightforward with a 6-4 6-1 win for Mark and Marie and a 6-1 6-2 victory for Jack and Wendy.

Their next match was a re-arranged trip to Congresbury A.  Mark and Jack again teamed up but unfortunately slipped to defeat losing the first set in a tie break.  Mother and daughter pair Ines and Charli Beeson put on a great display to win 6-1 6-1.  The mixed doubles were each one in straight sets to give Wells A a 8-2 victory away from home.

The B team stated their season with a trip to Cheddar A which turned out to be a very tight contest. Captain Jake Ford and partner Juan Carlos Jimenez went down to a straight sets defeat, however, Wendy Edwards and Vicky Flicker came out with a 6-1 6-3 victory. There were mixed result in the mixed doubles also with defeat for JC and Vicky but victory for Jake and Wendy. This all meant that the teams were level on sets and could only be split by two games in favour of Cheddar.  Nevertheless, it was 4 points on the board for Wells B.

The B team bounced back from this narrow defeat with a comfortable 10-0 at home versus Wrington A for a loss of just 17 games across the 8 sets with Jake joined by Dave Mills and Marie and Wendy partnering for the ladies doubles.

The C team commenced their season at home versus Bridgwater D. Captain Matt Briscoe and Jon Browne prevailed in a championship tie break, whilst Sue Llorca and Anne Croll had a fantastic 6-4 6-0 victory. The mixed doubles were each won in straight sets to give Wells C at 10-1 victory.

They backed this up with another victory at home against Cleeve B with Sue and Anne again featuring as the ladies and again winning 6-4 6-0. The men were represented by Sean Holden and George Tamvakopoulos and despite defeat in the mens doubles the team came together to win the mixed doubles in straight sets to complete an 8-2 victory.

At the time of writing all three teams sit in promotion places and we hope to continue this brilliant start. Well done to all those involved thus far.
