League Tennis at Wells
Wells has Men’s and Ladies teams in the North Somerset Tennis Winter and Summer Leagues. The Summer League runs from April to July and Men play on Mondays starting at 6.30pm and Ladies on Tuesdays at 6.30pm. There are 4 players in each team, each doubles pair playing 2 doubles. The Winter League runs from September to March and is played on Sundays from 12noon if a home match and can be on a weekday evening if an away match. The team comprises of 4 players, 2 men and 2 ladies, playing 1 men’s or ladies doubles and a mixed.
Match format
The match is the best of 3 sets with 7 point tie-break at 6 all in first and second sets and a Championship tie-break (10 points) in final set. There are usually 6 teams in each division so each team plays 5 matches home and away. A point is awarded for each set won and winning team also gets 2 points for the win. Team Captains of the Home Club enters players, scores and result of match on NSTL website. There are between 8 and 10 Divisions and at the end of the Summer or Winter season the 2 teams with most points are promoted to higher division, 2 teams in 3rd and 4th place stay and 2 teams in 5th and 6th are relegated to lower division for next season.
Process of selection
- Captains for the new season will be appointed before March 31st. Sitting Captains (i.e. captains from previous season) will be asked if they wish to continue and, if not someone else is appointed.
- The Men’s and Ladies Captains will speak to the Team Captains in order to co-ordinate a full list of players who wish to play and decide which player should play in which team, and if there are any gaps in any team any week which players should move up to a higher team. This should be based on individual play preferences and player ability as judged by team captain.
- All team captains should participate in the discussion about a player ability from their experience of that player in matches and practice sessions.
- All members who wish to play league tennis are encouraged to attend Men’s/Ladies Nights.
- All members who wish to be considered for selection should make this clear to one or more of the Team captains and/or Ladies or Men’s Captain. They should also say whether they prefer to play in one league or another or no preference.
- No member will be considered for selection if he or she has not paid their annual subscription.
- Ideally players provide their availability for the whole season or at least as far ahead as possible to their team captain.
- If any player feels he/she has been overlooked or selected for wrong team he/she should contact his/her team captain and/or Ladies or Men’s Captain.
- Any new member who joins the club during the season and is interested in playing league tennis and any junior member recommended by the Kevin or Ines, should be given the opportunity to play with one or more of the Team Captains to assess his or her level of playing ability for one of the teams.
