Club Championships Finals 2017
Wells Tennis Club was a hive of activity on Sunday September 17th as the annual Club Championships Finals were played. The rounds leading up to Finals were keenly contested over the Summer season.
There are some new names to appear on the trophies with Linda Hall successfully defending yet again her Ladies Singles title beating Caroline Moule 6/1 6/0, a score which did not reflect the standard of play.
The Mens Singles was won by Seth Cunningham, who beat Kevin Durney 7/5 6/0. The match was notable for both players using every inch of the court and hitting the lines consistently.
Kevin then partnered Colin Blatchford Brown to defend their title in the Mens Doubles. They were not so fortunate this year and came up against the pairing of father and son, Charles and Luke Tweed and lost 6/3 6/0.
The Ladies Doubles was noted for it’s solid play and good interceptions. Caroline Moule and Wendy Edwards came out the winners beating Anne Fudge and Linda Lester 6/3 6/2.
Luke Tweed partnered his Mum, Jo, and won the Mixed Doubles beating Binkie Heather and Martyn Holliday.
A new event this year was the Senior (over 60) Mixed. This was eventually won by Martyn Holliday and Binkie Heather in a Championship tiebreak in third set beating Ray Brook and Cathy Cudmore in a closely contested match 7/5 4/6 1/0
Tasha Smith, Club President will present the trophies at The Presentation Evening on Wednesday November 1st at 7.15pm at The Football Club.
