French Open Fun and Sunshine at Wells Tennis Club

Wells Tennis Club served up another smashing afternoon of tennis and social fun on Sunday 8th June as we hosted our very own French Open Tournament. With 20 enthusiastic players taking part, the courts were buzzing with energy, laughter, and a little healthy competition!

The tournament followed a fun and friendly format where players mixed partners throughout, with individual scores being tallied as they went. Over the course of two hours, we were lucky enough to enjoy dry courts and a glorious stretch of late afternoon sunshine – though the gusty wind certainly added an extra challenge! Let’s just say a few missed lines may have had more to do with the breeze than the backhand…

Following the tennis, everyone gathered to enjoy a superb spread of French-inspired food, lovingly organised by our brilliant Social Secretary, Juliet, and her equally dedicated husband, Gary. From cheese boards to baguettes and everything in between, it was a feast fit for Roland-Garros itself!

Once plates were emptied and glasses topped up, attention turned to the all-important prize giving. Congratulations to Matt Stevens and Walford Gillison, who emerged as our tournament champions after a consistent display on court. Our raffle winners were also all smiles – Matthew Griffiths took home a bottle of French Champagne, while Kevin received a beautiful rose, kindly donated by Jon Browne. A small consolation, perhaps, for spending his day off ‘working’ – but we’re sure the rose will help smooth things over!

The event also raised £44 for our ongoing clubhouse fundraising, so a huge thank you to everyone who supported the raffle and helped make the day such a success.

Next up on the social calendar is our Wimbledon Picnic Social on Sunday 13th July – a chance to enjoy a hit on court before sharing some picnic food with fellow members, and then head home in time to catch the Wimbledon action on TV. We hope to see you there!

 Vive le tennis! 🎾🇫🇷
