Wells Ladies final round up
Wells A ladies hosted Cleeve A
After having a close battle in the away match it remained nip and tuck for the return.
Wells first pair Wendy Edwards and Caroline Moule had a spirited contest against the crafty Cleeve first pair and even though they were defeated in two sets, they accrued vital games for the overall score.
Second pair of Heidi Shakespeare and Julia Nest had an enjoyable time with the Cleeve second pair and took the rubber in two sets.
With honours even, the second two rubbers were all to play for but both pairings ended on exactly the same score with Edwards and Moule storming to a 6-0 6-0 win and Shakespeare and Nest doing the reverse! This meant the overall victory went down to games in order to split the teams and they were only parted by a single one. Wells sneaked it and took the spoils with a score of 6-4!
Captain Nest admired her team for their brilliant efforts, especially Heidi Shakespeare, as it was her first time playing for the A Team.
Wells D vs Cheddar
What a way to round off the Summer league- a resounding win against Cheddar last evening in warm sunshine and latterly an eclipsed moon!
Cheddar were welcoming as ever with familiar faces including 70 year old Susan with her slightly fierce manner and drop shots.
I was delighted to have Megan as my partner with her beautiful cross court returns and centrally placed volleys and we beat both couples 6-3, 6-4, 6-4, and 6-0.
Kate and Arabella beat the second couple 6-2 and 6-4 and then went onto a three setter with the first couple, finishing well after 10 pm under the aforementioned lunar eclipse!
They won the first set 6-4, lost the second 5-7 and narrowly lost the nail biting championship tie breaker. They battled hard and stayed the course.
So overall Wells won 47 games to 27, 9 points to 2.
Bravo and thanks to all members particularly our first timer Megan.
Thanks again to Captain Julia for sussing our availability, making up the teams, adding in extras at the last minute and generally being the good egg she is!
