Wells Tennis Club Championships Finals

On Sunday September 18th the annual Club Championships Finals took place. The spectators were not disappointed as the sun was shining and the standard of tennis was excellent.

The Mens Singles and Junior events were postponed due to illness and holidays, but will played at a later date.

Ladies Singles finalLinda Hall, Sarah Townsend and Kevin Durney had a busy day as they each were in two finals. Linda Hall won the Ladies Singles beating Sarah Townsend 6-1 6-1. The score line did not reflect the good standard of play by both.

Womens Doubles playersSarah and Linda then teamed up to play the Ladies Doubles against Vicky Flicker and Lorna Jenkins. This was a to and fro battle and, although Vicky and Lorna won the first set 6-4 they eventually lost 6-4 1-6 3-6.

Mens Doubles Final pairsThe Mens Doubles was between Kevin Durney/Colin Blatchford Brown and Graham Harvey/Dave Mills. Despite a knee injury the partnership of Mills and Harvey battled hard, but Durney/Blatchford Brown came out as winners 6-4 6-3.

Mixed Doubles Finalists The Mixed Doubles event proved to be a very closely contested match between Kevin Durney/Julia Nest, defending their title, and Tomas Simko/Binkie Heather. Both Durney and Simko, as Wells Tennnis Club coaches, showed their skills and knowledge of court tactics and play. Not to be outdone Julia showed her good placement of serves and Binkie her irretrievable interceptions at net.  After three long sets Simko and Heather claimed victory over the defending champions.

Tasha Smith, President, will present the trophies to winners and finalists at the Presentation Evening.
