Club Championships Finals 2026
The Club held their Club Championship Finals on Sunday September 13th and, although rain was forecast, it did not stop the matches being played. Spectators were treated to matches that were keenly contested and highlighted the excellent standard of play at Wells Tennis Club.
Matt Goatcher put up a sterling effort in the Men’s Singles, but Nik Healey’s consistency of length, ability to retrieve seemingly unretrievable shots and well placed serves proved just too strong. Nik won 6-2 6-2.
In the ladies first set, Becky’s slice backhand proved too strong and she won 6-2. In the second set Becky raced to a 5-2 lead before the rain came. This proved beneficial to Corali who came back strongly to win the next three games and level the score at 5-5. However Becky regrouped and held her nerve to take the set 7-5 so winning the match.
The combination of Matt Goatcher and Kevin Durney proved too strong for JC Jimenez and Dave Mills and they won convincingly 6-3 6-0 proving why they are in the A team. There were some good exchanges at the net with Kevin showing off his volleying technique and careful placement.
The experienced partnership of Martyn Holliday and Sue Llorca proved too strong against Sean Holden and Chie Preston winning 6-1 6-3 in the Senior Mixed Final.
Nik Healey teamed up with Daisy Karnas to play the Mixed Doubles Final against JC Jimenez and Wendy Edwards. The first set the teams were evenly matched and Nik and Daisy won it 6-4 and in the second set Nik and Daisy took control hitting good length and producing timely interceptions and won it 6-1.
The Ladies Doubles was the only match to go the distance with the result decided ultimately on a Championship tie break. Heidi and Alison started strongly, combining powerful baseline hitting with well timed interceptions at net to take the first set 6-4. In the second set Wendy and Corali changed their tactics to great effect, turning the match around and winning it 6-0. They then carried on the momentum into the tiebreak winning it convincingly by 10 – 1 points to take the match and the trophy.
