Winter League – Wells B vs Clevedon B
On Sunday, Wells B Team started the return half of the Tennis Winter League. Currently in second place in division 6, a mere one point behind the top spot, they were eager to continue their winning run.
On a very drizzly and cold morning, they headed out to try their luck on Cleeve B’s outdoor carpet courts. The Mens pairing of Dave Mills and Martyn Holliday struggled on the unfamiliar surface and despite some very tough rallies, couldn’t find the edge needed to get ahead, losing the match 6-2 6-4.
The ladies, Julia Nest and Ruth Angelinetta, had an equally shaky start and couldn’t get ahead of their opponents in the first set. They battled through winning the first set on a tie break, then dropping just one game in the second, for an impressive 7-6 6-1 win.
With the scores level it was down to the mixed pairs to decide the clash. Dave Mills and Julia Nest wobbled a little at the start, but didn’t look back, racing to a 6-3 6-2 win. Martyn Holliday and Ruth Angelinetta had a tough job but managed to clinch a vital first set on a very close tie break. They couldn’t keep up the momentum losing the second set and also lost a very tight championship tie break in the third, to lose the match 7-6 3-6 0-1. With the vital extra set claimed by Wells B, they won the fixture 7-4.
