Wells Tennis Club on strong form

Ladies Wells A-team welcomed Avenue A for their match on Tuesday 12 June 2018. Both pairs of the Wells team won against the second pair of Avenue 6-1 6-1. But both also were defeated by Avenue’s first pair. Erika Cotton and Julia Nest lost 4-6 2-6 and Wendy Edwards and Caroline Moule lost 5-7 3-6. With level on rubbers and sets it was down to points with Wells emerging as the winners for the overall points of 6-4.

Wells D team travelled to Cheddar to claim a 7-4 victory!  Well done to Arabella, Lynda, Sarah and Deborah and captains thanks goes to Deborah for stepping in as away team Captain.  With half of the season over the teams are looking forward to the return matches. 

Wells Men’s Teams played out some close matches this week. The A Team travelled once again to the Clevedon, this time taking on their A Team. James Edwards and Jon Parsons won their heated first encounter 6-4, 7-6. Matt Goatcher and Dave Mills struggled losing 6-2, 6-0. In the reverse matches Goatcher and Mills fell to a similar score line of 6-0, 6-2. Edwards and Parsons won another edgy affair 6-4, 6-4. With two wins each Clevedon won the encounter 6-4 on games.

the B Team won a hard-fought match at home to Avenue B. Marcus Fischer and Graham Harvey came back from losing the first set 6-1 to take the first match 1-6, 7-6, 7-6 in over two hours. In their second match they also lost the first set 6-1 but won on a championship tie break 1-6, 6-3, 1-0. Kevin Durney and Neil Coleman won their first match 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 and followed that up by taking a 6-0, 2-1 lead in their final match before an opponent retired injured. The final score was 9-4 to Wells.

The C-Team had an exceptionally close match hosting Brent Knoll. Ed Pearce and Dave Cotton lost their first match 6-2, 6-3 before clinching their second 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile Karl Tucker and Ray Brook powered through their first match 6-0, 6-2 before falling to Brent Knoll’s strong first pair 6-2, 6-1. With the score at 2 matches and 4 sets each it went down to a game count which Wells edged 32-31 and took the tie 6-4. It’s another reminder that every game counts in league tennis.

The D-Team had a strong away performance at Cleeve B. Martyn Halliday and Richard Hole got Wells off to a flying start winning their first match 6-1, 6-2. They followed this up with a 7-5, 7-6 victory in their second match. Colin Blatchford-Brown and Ian Baker had two long matches winning the first 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 before narrowly losing out in their second 6-4, 5-7, 2-6. This gave Wells D Team a 9-3 away victory keeping them top of their division.
