A Strong showing for Wells’ Men in pre-season friendly
On Monday 11th April Wells’ Men’s A & B teams travelled to Cheddar for a pre-season friendly. It was a chance for both clubs to get some match practice before the serious business of the league season. The weather was wet and chilly up to the last minute but the skies cleared and it was a perfect evening for tennis.
For the A Team Kevin Durney and James Edwards shot out of the blocks with a 6-3 6-2 win. A closely contested match saw Matt Goatcher and Derk Erkelens edge a championship tie break coming out winners 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. The reverse matches saw another straight sets win for Kevin and James 6-3, 6-0 while Matt and Derk won a hard fought contest 6-3, 6-3.
For the B-Team Dave Mills and Nigel Cowlin came back from 3-1 down in the second set to win their first match 6-2, 6-3 and followed that up with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory. Graham Harvey and Marcus Fisher won a close second set to take their first match 6-1, 7-5 and finished strongly with a 6-3, 6-2 win in their second.
The match was played in a competitive and friendly spirit by all. Hopefully it paves the way for more inter-club friendly matches in the future. Captain Matt Goatcher felt it was a strong showing from both teams, giving us confidence going into the start of the season. On 25th April The A-Team visit Victoria, Street while the B-Team play Wells C-Team in a Division 5 grudge match.
