Wells Tennis Club Kicks Off NSTL Summer League

The North Somerset Tennis League (NSTL) summer season commenced with Wells Tennis Club’s men’s and ladies’ teams delivering a blend of triumphs and challenges in their opening matches.

Men’s Teams: Strong Performances

Wells A defeated Winscombe A 7–4 at Wells Tennis Club on April 28.

Wells A secured a commendable victory against Winscombe A. Mark and Kevin, despite an initial setback in a close championship tie-break, rebounded impressively with a commanding 6-2, 6-2 win in their second match. Matt and Cy began strongly with a 6-3, 6-4 win; however, an injury to Cy affected their subsequent performance, leading to a 3-6, 0-6 loss. The team’s resilience was pivotal in clinching the overall win.

Wells B secured an 8–4 win against Winscombe B at Winscombe Tennis Club.

Wells B demonstrated tenacity, with Matt and Tom playing crucial roles by winning both their matches in thrilling tie-breaks (7-6, 6-7, 1-0). Jake and Rob added to the team’s success with a 6-4, 6-4 victory, narrowly missing out in their second match’s tie-break. Their composure under pressure was instrumental in the team’s overall success.

Congresbury C overcame Wells C 10–0 at Wells Tennis Club.

Facing a formidable Congresbury C team, Wells C endured a challenging match. JC and Dave showcased determination, narrowly losing their matches (2-6, 4-6 and 4-6, 6-7). Karl and Jon also delivered competitive performances, but Congresbury’s dominance prevailed throughout.

Wells D triumphed 7–4 over Congresbury D at Winscombe Tennis Club.

Wells D emerged victorious with notable performances from Alex and Mike, who won their first match 6-2, 6-3. Despite a 4-6, 1-6 loss in their second match, the duo’s efforts were commendable. Gabriel and Sean, after a tight initial loss, made a strong comeback to win 7-5, 6-2, securing the team’s overall win.

Ladies’ Teams: Impressive Efforts

Wells Ladies A beat Wrington A 8–2 on April 29.

The newly formed pair of Ines and Becky proved effective, winning both matches in straight sets (6-3, 6-4 and 6-0, 6-0). Izzy and Jade faced a narrow defeat (6-7, 4-6) but benefited from a walkover in their second match due to an opponent’s injury. Their next challenge is against Victoria A on 13 May.

Congresbury A edged out Wells Ladies B 8–2.

The B team, comprising Julia and Corali , alongside Caroline and Alison , faced a tough match against Congresbury A. Despite the loss, the experience gained will be valuable for their upcoming match against Winscombe A.

Clevedon B won 9–2 against Wells Ladies C.

The C team, featuring Arabella and Chie , as well as Anne and Lynda , encountered a strong Clevedon B side. While the score line was challenging, the team displayed commendable effort throughout.

Wells Ladies D did not have a match this week.

As the NSTL summer league progresses, Wells Tennis Club’s teams are poised to build on their experiences, aiming for continued growth and success in the upcoming fixtures.
