Wells Teams gain promotion with a match to spare

In the last couple of weeks Wells A-Team first went away to Bridgwater A and lost 10-0 to the strongly fancied league leaders. The following week they hosted Clevedon A, one of the other teams fighting for second place in Division 1. With the teams locked on 47 points at the start of the evening Kevin Durney and Jon Parsons won a close first match 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. They followed this up with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win. Matt Goatcher and Seth Cunningham won their first match 7-5, 7-5 before having to play out two championship tie breaks in their second. Having lost the first set they won the first tie break before being edged out in the second to lose 6-4, 0-1, 1-0. This gave Wells A a 9-3 victory and took them clear in second place.

Wells B-Team had lost 7-4 against a resurgent Brent Knoll team the previous week and were looking to make amends. They went away to Avenue B where first pair Dave Mills and Neil Coleman lost a tight first match 7-5, 6-4, however they went on to win their second match 7-5, 6-0. Second pair Rob Powell and Marcus Fisher won their first match 7-6, 6-3 before narrowly losing out in a championship tie break 6-7, 6-4, 1-0. The final result was 7-4 which confirms their promotion to Division 4 next year regardless of their final result.

Wells C-Team picked up an important 10-0 win against Clevedon D the previous week with Derk Erkelens, Ed Pearce, Ray Brook and Karl Tucker sweeping all before them. This week they came up against Brent Knoll who had tripped up the B-Team the previous week. Ed Pearce and Dave Cotton lost out 6-3, 7-6 and 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 while Steve Hall and Ian Baker lost 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-2. The 10-1 loss puts them in a precarious situation where they will need a good win against Avenue B in the final week to stay up.

Having secured their top spot with a 9-3 Victory away at Weston C the week before, Wells D Team’s penultimate match was at home against Cleeve B. Martyn Halliday and Richard Hole continued their strong form this season with a 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 win following it up with a 6-4, 6-1 win against the Cleeve second pair. Dan Cooke and Colin Blatchford-Brown lost out 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in a match that swung one way and then the other. They lost 6-4, 6-2 in their second match but picking up a set in their first match gave Wells a 7-4 victory. This gives them 7 wins from 9 matches and a very successful season. With one match to play the B and D Teams are guaranteed promotion while the A-Team are fighting for honours in Division one. If the C-Team can win in their final match then Wells can certainly consider this a very successful season all round, fingers are crossed.
